Trump splits hairs on what he said about wars
He did not “promise.” In terms of how his audience received the message — look at the video — it is a lie.
President Donald J. Trump now is pretending he did not pledge to his loyal MAGA base that he would not engage in “endless wars,” such as the one the U.S. had waged in Iraq.
“I didn’t promise anything. I don’t like these endless wars. This is not an endless war,” he told host Kristen Welker on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” an interview that aired Sunday. (Welker is a native Philadelphian.)
He seems to be hanging his case on the word “promise.” As a candidate, and earlier, he ceaselessly criticized U.S. involvement in overseas military action, said he could end wars “with a phone call,” and in his 2024 acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention he said, if elected, “The years of war, weakness and chaos will be over,’’ but he did not use the word “promise.”
So, technically, that is true. He did not “promise.” In terms of how his audience received the message — look at the video — it is a lie. It is classic hair-splitting. Will MAGA bark back? We will see.
During a 2016 debate with Republican opponents, Trump said, “We spent $2 trillion, thousands of lives, we don’t even have it. Iran is taking over Iraq, with the second-largest oil reserves in the world. Obviously, it was a mistake.” Meaning the war in Iraq. That’s what he said.
But Iran is not.
That’s what he said.
